PRESS RELEASE
Feb. 8, 2010
In a return of the radio station call-letters that generations of Westmoreland County residents grew up with, WGSM FM, 107.1, has become WHJB- FM 107.1
The station that began as SAM-FM retained the call letters WGSM (Greensburg’s SAM) when the SAM music format was replaced in favor of the current and more popular Classic Hits format.
Now, the station will be known as Classic Hits 107.1 WHJB, the call letters of Greensburg's only AM station from 1934 to 1999, when they were dropped.
Renda Broadcasting, owner of WGSM, recently acquired the WHJB identification and today, launched the call letters on-air.
In announcing the new station ID, Tony Renda, President of Renda Broadcasting, said:
“I am very excited that we were able to bring the WHJB call letters back to Greensburg and Westmoreland County. It returns a heritage that goes back to the beginning of radio.”
Renda emphasized that 107.1 WHJB-FM is committed to "local news and community involvement in Westmoreland County."
Greensburg native & Westmoreland resident, Hank Baughman, has been assigned to WHJB-FM to head up news coverage, joined by fellow Westmoreland resident, Diane Lasko, in the morning. As both worked at WHJB when it was an AM station, it's "back to the future," as the FM team noted.
