McGuffey 9 Greensburg Central Catholic 28
It was the tale of two halves, but the end result was the same as the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions defeated the McGuffey Highlanders, 28-9, in a WPIAL Class AA Interstate Conference showdown Friday night. The Centurions established a solid running game in the second half, rushing for 175 yards on 26 second half carries to defeat the Highlanders. Central quarterback Trent Hurley attempted only two passes in the third and fourth quarters combined, but managed the game enough for his team to improve to 2-0 in conference play this year.
The Highlanders started the scoring on their first drive from scrimmage when kicker Matt Reginelli connected on a 22-yard field goal that capped off a 10 play, 33 yard drive. But Central’s defense never wavered, allowing only one other score, a four-yard touchdown run by Logan McAnny to cap off an eight play, 59 yard drive in the third quarter. Central held McGuffey to 126 total yards in the game.
Central’s offense totaled 320 yards, which included 172 on the ground and 148 through the air. Running back David Miller paced his team’s offensive attack throughout the game, rushing 11 times for 70 yards, including two for touchdowns of one yard and 17 yards, respectively. Miller’s one yard touchdown run came in the first quarter, following four straight completions from Hurley to his receiving core. Hurley rushed for a touchdown of his own late in the third quarter, capping off a 12 play, 90-yard drive.
Central will attempt to move to 3-0 next week when it takes on the Washington Little Prexies on the road, the first of two straight road games for Central. Central’s next home matchup is September 26 against Waynesburg.
