Gateway used a combination of big plays and team speed to defeat Norwin, 49-7, in a Class Quad A FootHills showdown Friday night. Entering Friday’s game, Gateway was ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and proved exactly why in its conference victory.
Gateway got off to a strong start on its first drive when quarterback Rob Kalkstein threw a touchdown strike of 39 yards to wide-out Corey Brown. Kalkstein threw three touchdown passes in the game, all of which Brown was the recipient. Kalkstein’s second completion to Brown was for 26 yards and the third was for six yards.
While Gateway used a vaunted passing attack, the team also used its speed to establish a strong rushing attack. Running back Dorian Bell carried the ball only two times, but gained 168 and scored two touchdowns in the process. Bell’s first score was an 80-yard scamper in the second quarter. His second score was an 88-yard rush in the third quarter that continued the first half trend.
Norwin quarterback Alex Dennison worked hard throughout the game to elude the Gateway defense and found some success. Under constant pressure, Dennison completed five passes for 63 yards. Dennison rushed for a four yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
With the win, Gateway remains undefeated in 2008.
