Higher Vitamin D Levels Mean Lower Weight in New Study, Retailer Reports
Greensburg, PA—February 1, 2011
Nature's Way Market, a locally-owned independent natural health store in Greensburg, Pennyslvania, reports a new diet study that confirmed for the first time those who lost more weight had higher blood levels of vitamin D compared to those with lower vitamin D levels.
The report is part of the February, 2011, issue of Natural Insights for Well Being®, which Nature's Way Market publishes free each month to inform Greensburg community residents of the health benefits of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle. Also in the February issue, women who regularly took omega-3 fish oil supplements were 32 percent less likely to develop the most common form of breast cancer compared to women who did not regularly take fish oil supplements; and women who took multivitamins were 27 percent less likely to have a heart attack compared to women who did not take supplements, among other important findings.
“We are pleased to see that well-respected scientific journals such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, and the British Journal of Nutrition, among others, continue to find everyday nutrients help protect against disease and help ensure health,” said Kitty Tuscano, owner of Nature’s Way Market. “Men, women and dieters will find our February issue packed with new, useful nutrition research to help get and stay healthy,” Tuscano said.

Sweet Dreams
Reference: Journal of Sleep Research; 2010, Vol. 19, No. 4, 591-6
Melatonin increased healthy rapid eye movement sleep patterns
Normal sleep has two states; non-rapid eye movement and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which last about three-quarters of the night and one-quarter of the night, respectively. During normal REM sleep, the eyes move rapidly, breathing becomes irregular, blood pressure rises, and muscles lose tone in a type of temporary protective natural paralysis. The sleeper usually dreams during REM and the brain is often as active as when awake.
In REM sleep-behavior disorder (RBD), natural muscle paralysis does not occur, allowing the person to physically “act out” his or her vivid and intense dreams. Eight men with RBD took 3 mg of melatonin each night between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., or a placebo. After four weeks, while the placebo group had not improved, men who had taken melatonin had 30 percent fewer REM sleep periods without paralysis, and healthier REM sleep continued for four weeks after the men stopped taking melatonin.
