Attorneys for Melvin Knight have talked about some of the experts they are bringing in to testify in his re-sentencing hearing.
As we reported, Knight was originally sentenced to death for his part in the torture killing of Jennifer Dougherty in 2010, but in 2016, an appellate court overturned the death sentence and asked for a new sentencing hearing. KDKA-TV reports that defense attorney Tim Dawson said that they will take the approach that Knight may have killed but his mental state needs to be taken into account, and they will have mental health experts from Philadelphia and Washington DC to testify.
Dawson also said that Knight has been in and out of mental health facilities since the age of six.
The defense is claiming that Knight is mentally disabled, and should be exempt from the death penalty.
