A man who had sought marriage while he was in prison awaiting trial for the killing of a New Kensington police officer will not be allowed to get married without a judge’s approval.
The Tribune-Review reports that Judge Rita Hathaway on Thursday dismissed a petition from prosecutors that sought to stop Rahmael Holt from marrying Vanessa Portis, a witness in the case against him, saying it was a moot point.
In a hearing last month, Holt told the judge that he was no longer seeking to marry Portis. Prosecutors believed he was trying to marry her so that she could not testify against him. She allegedly drove him around to various locations after he reportedly shot Brian Shaw last November.
Judge Hathaway added that if he does want to get married, he has to notify his attorneys, who then have to notify the DA’s office.
