Testimony got underway yesterday in the resentencing hearing for Melvin Knight.
Knight is one of six people charged with the torture killing of Jennifer Daugherty back in 2010. The Tribune-Review reports that jurors yesterday heard the details concerning the condition of Daughtery’s body when it was found, and what Knight and five others did to Daugherty.
Back in 2012, Knight pleaded guilty and was sentenced to death, but a state appeals court in 2016 vacated the sentence and ordered a new sentencing trial. While the prosecution is expected to present evidence like it was a murder trial, the defense will focus on Knight’s mental health and ask for a life prison sentence.
Testimony will continue today.
