Jury selection is scheduled to start today for a new penalty hearing in the trial of Melvin Knight.
Knight was one of six people convicted in connection with the torture-killing of Jennifer Daughtery, a mentally disabled woman. Prosecutors at the time said she was held for more than two days and stabbed to death. Her body was found stuffed in a garbage can that was discarded under a truck in a parking lot.
A state appeals court overturned a death sentence against Knight and ordered a new penalty hearing. Defense attorneys say they will bring in evidence that Knight is mentally disabled and not eligible for the death penalty.
