A State Department of Agriculture study is considering whether more animal agriculture and manure should be moved from Eastern Pennsylvania to Westmoreland, Indiana and Armstrong counties.
The Tribune-Review reports that the study shows that Westmoreland County could support more cattle and manure coming into the area, but the researchers from Penn State say that the concept faces significant obstacles because of the lack of large livestock processors, livestock production input suppliers, insufficient transportation infrastructure among other problems.
The tri-county area was chosen because they rank low in the state for livestock production and have room for growth.
