If you noticed an odd odor over the last week in Hempfield Township, you’re not alone.
The Tribune-Review reports that the odor, which has been prevalent on Route 136, is due to a leak of mercaptan at a natural gas storage facility. Mercaptan is the foul-smelling odor added to natural gas which makes it easy to detect if there is a leak.
The leak has been temporarily repaired and crews at the facility are working on a more permanent solution. The mercaptan is not flammable and poses no risk.
