Firefighters from 50 Westmoreland County Fire Departments are distributing 9-volt batteries in several communities.
The Tribune-Review reports the batteries were paid through a Duracell/Keep America Beautiful Grant and a grant from Westmoreland Cleanways. The batteries will be handed out close to Daylight Saving Time, when people are encouraged to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.
The distribution will be done through some events that the fire department will put on and through door-to-door distribution. For a list of the participating fire departments, call 724-879-4020.
