Pennsylvania’s Auditor General says that the Pennsylvania Turnpike is on what he calls a “road to ruin.”
At a news conference yesterday releasing the performance audit of the Turnpike Commission, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said that the Turnpike Commission can’t raise tolls continually to cover the required payments to PennDOT under Act 44 of 2007. He did commend the commission for trying to pursue toll evaders.
The main concern is a lawsuit that is being brought about by truckers who say diverting tolls to PennDOT is a violation of interstate commerce laws, with DePasquale saying the consequences could be disastrous if the truckers win the lawsuit.
