A traffic study of intersections near the new Latrobe elementary school show that new crosswalks will help out, but the areas studied do not qualify for stop signs.
The Tribune-Review reports that a preliminary study from Gibson-Thomas Engineering addressed concerns about child safety as they walk to and from school. Traffic counts and other factors have fallen short of PennDOT requirements for stop signs at Lincoln and Cherry, even though the area has a history of wrecks. But reps with Gibson-Thomas say the new crosswalks would be recommended on Cherry Street where it intersects with Lincoln and Ligonier streets.
PennDOT approval and handicapped accessible curb ramps need to be installed before the crosswalk goes in place.
