Kennametal could close its Carbidie manufacturing operations in Hempfield.
The Tribune-Review reports that no final decisions have been made but talks have commenced between the company and the United Steelworkers about the plan. Public notices have shown that Kennametal has not notified the state Department of Labor and Industry.
The Carbidie plant was acquired by Kennametal in 1997. Kennametal CEO Christopher Rossi said that last week in a quarterly earnings call that the company is moving into the next phase of the simplification and modernization program to help save $30-$40 million annually by July of 2020.
