The Westmoreland County Intermediate Unit is raising awareness about the deficit in state funding for public education in the county.
According to a news release, this was brought up in a meeting this week of the IU, it was announced that between the 2010-11 school year and the 2020-21 school year, there is a mandated cost deficit of nearly $52 million. The main factors for this are increased required pension reimbursement, charter tuition reimbursement and increases in special education services. The IU feels that the increased costs in mandated impacts on districts is far outweighing the money the state supplies, and if it keeps up, districts will be forced to continue to rely on tax increases or program cuts, or possibly go bankrupt.
The information has also been shared with the Westmoreland Public Education Advocacy Committee and to all state legislators from Westmoreland County in an effort to address the problem.
