A jury in Pittsburgh’s federal court has said that Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people and wounded many others during the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in 2018, is eligible for the death penalty.
WPXI-TV reports that the jury reached its decision after two hours of deliberation. The jury had to decide three things: if he was 18 or older, if he had intent and if there was at least one of a list of twelve aggravating circumstances. Prosecutors said that Bowers came with a clear and calculated plan. While the defense did not deny the attack, they said that Bowers had a mental illness.
The trial now moves to the final sentencing phase, where victim impact statements will be heard, and the jury will decide if he should be put to death.
