Officials in Jeannette are looking at tearing down 10 blighted buildings, but one caught the attention of local fire officials.
The Trib reports that the one property was a row house on 422 South Fifth Street, as fire chief Bill Frye said that it’s been a hot spot for illegal activity, including drug use and squatters. He reported that there was a group of squatters in the building cooking canned pasta with an open fire on the floor of the building.
All 10 properties in yesterday’s demolition hearing are vacant and have years of code enforcement and property maintenance issues. A property on Western Avenue and one on Chestnut Street got reprieves and property owners will meet with code enforcement officials to figure out renovation plans.
