One of the Democratic candidates for Westmoreland County Commissioner has asked to remove her name from the ballot.
The Trib reports that 28-year-old Sydney Hovis of Scottdale was one of two Democratic candidates for the ballot along with Ted Kopas. In her post, she blamed the Democratic Party’s backing of Kopas as a factor in her decision to withdraw from the race, saying that Kopas was in her opinion “an entrenched politician with no substantive accomplishments.” She also said that she felt she can better help the region by acting independent of a political party and outside of the political arena.
County Elections Bureau Director Greg McCloskey said Democrats have until Aug. 24 to select a ballot replacement for Hovis.
