The Hempfield Area School Board is adopting new rules on challenging books in the district.
The Trib reports that at last night’s meeting, members voted in favor of guidelines and challenge policies that have been discussed for a number of months. The restrictions mainly deal with sexual content in literature, both written and visual, and will require school officials to post library book purchase lists 30 days before ordering them so that the public can look over the titles.
District residents can request a formal review of a particular book, meaning a committee consisting of school employees, a student, and community members will decide on whether a particular title can remain available in schools.
