Emergency officials say that the fire hydrant system in the Rustic Ridge neighborhood of Plum was not adequate enough to fight a single fully-engulfed house fire.
The Trib reports that the summation came from Logans Ferry Fire Chief Steve Marsh and from Allegheny County Emergency Services. Both said that the gallons-per-minute provided by the hydrants were inadequate to fight the fire from a house explosion that happened in August. Hydrants in the Rustic Ridge area are meant to handle 500 gallons a minute, but if there were fires at some of the properties in the development, 700 gallons a minute would be needed at least.
Jim Sims, the fire chief at Holiday Park fire department and Plum’s emergency management coordinator declined to comment.
