A possible merger involving Spirit Airlines is leaving officials with Arnold Palmer Regional Airport with questions about the future.
Spirit is the only commercial carrier that serves the Westmoreland County airport, now offering only one daily flight to Orlando and some seasonal Myrtle Beach trips. A proposed deal between Spirit and JetBlue is the subject of an anti-trust court case in Boston, with a ruling possible before next year.
Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo says around two dozen current full-time staff members at Palmer would be shifted to part-time to handle strictly private and charter flights if Spirit decides to end their service.
