The New Kensington City Council is considering a new garbage collection contract that could see costs for residents increase by more than 70 percent.
Members are set to vote on a new five-year collection agreement at this afternoon’s meeting. Another measure would set the rate for collection at 540 dollars annually starting next year, significantly higher than the current yearly cost of about 312 dollars. The rate is tied to a new 15-point-three-million-dollar contract with the current provider, the Westmoreland County Sanitary Landfill operating under the business name County Hauling.
There will be a public comment period before the contract vote at today’s meeting. The session is planned for 4:30 p.m. at New Kensington City Hall.
