The son of a Chinese national who attacked a man with a meat cleaver in Greensburg is asking the Westmoreland County District Attorney to return the $20,000 seized as evidence.
The Trib reports that 57-year-old Liwu Tian was sentenced in November to serve up to 23 months in jail for the attack and was released on parole. His son, Jianmin, brought the $20,000 to the courthouse believing that he was paying his father’s restitution, but the money was seized by county detectives.
At a hearing a month earlier, the victim reported that Tian’s family offered to pay him $20,000 to withhold testimony and leave the area, according to prosecutors. Lawyers for the Tians say that the mix-up was due to the fact that English isn’t their primary language.
