Derry Borough Council is considering a two-year moratorium on any revival of the borough’s k-9 officer program. The Trib reports that the program was disbanded in October after k-9 officer Smoke was euthanized after he was injured in an incident last August in the backyard of his handler, Chief Randy Glick when the dog got into an incident with a family dog. After an investigation by Westmoreland County’s District Attorney’s Office, it was announced that there was no evidence to support any criminal charges in Smoke’s death. Council members are also expected to decide soon if a memorial will be placed for Smoke in Derry Community Park and to donate the $3300 they have left in the police dog program funds to a nearby animal shelter.
