The National Transportation Safety Board says well over a decade without the proper repairs or maintenance is what ultimately led to the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse. The board met yesterday to discuss their final analysis of the January, 2022 span failure that left four people hospitalized. NTSB Senior Structural Engineer Dan Walsh says the city did not act on over 15 years of repair recommendations made in inspection reports, allowing corrosion to weaken the steel structure to the point that it gave way. The NTSB has noted that Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is putting changes in place to address any similar issues with city-owned bridges.
