Westmoreland County is set to receive $300 million in road, transit and bridge improvement funds. The Trib reports that one project that could receive some of that funding is the West Newton Bridge project. The metal truss bridge carries over 6000 vehicles a day on Route 136 across the Youghiogheny River, and was declared in poor condition in 2022 with a deteriorating superstructure. The project appeared among several on the horizon around Westmoreland County in a proposed 2025-28 Transportation Improvement Program being planned by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission. The agency anticipates spending $3.8 billion on highway, bridge and transit projects in 10 counties in 2025-28.
