Derry Borough is mourning the loss of the president of borough council. The Trib reports that 57-year-old Al Checca died unexpectedly on Sunday at UPMC Presbyterian, where he had been in recovery for a brain aneurysm that triggered his involvement in a vehicle accident in the borough. He was elected to his third term of office on the Derry Borough Council last November, serving on council for over 10 years. At Monday’s Council Session, it was declared that his vacant seat and nameplate would be maintained at council meetings for the rest of the year as a tribute to him. Meanwhile, council has 30 days to fill the vacancy on the roster.
