The Westmoreland County Housing Authority is going forward with a plan to install a solar farm near Hempfield Towers. Board members have approved the purchase of six acres of land behind the senior apartment property for the project. The idea is to put in thousands of panels that will provide electricity to the towers. Housing authority Executive Director Mike Washowich says the agency currently pays full utility rates at Hempfield Towers, meaning the solar setup will save them a significant amount of money.
