Hempfield Township supervisors are rejecting a proposed property tax increase. The board members voted three-to-two against a three-mill levy that would generate funding for the township’s fire departments as they sorted through the budget for next year during their meeting yesterday. If passed, the levy would have doubled the current tax rate, which has remained at three mills since 1990. The local leaders say they likely won’t be able to hold off on tax hikes for too much longer. Yesterday’s budget vote was preliminary and a final vote will still be needed.
