Plans are in place to move the entire Pennsylvania Turnpike over to open road tolling. Planners for the route say the full system will be set up by January of 2027. This means that overhead scanners will read license plates and EZ-Pass transponders in order to collect tolls along the roadway, eliminating the need for pay booths at interchanges. The new system will cost about 250 million dollars and will include 38 scanner structures across the state.
