Local drug and addiction experts say a dangerous animal tranquilizer is showing up on the streets across Western Pennsylvania. Health officials say the drug medetomidine is extremely dangerous due to it not responding to Narcan and due to its extreme withdraw effects. The drug is not approved for human use and can lower heart rate, slow breathing, and lower blood pressure for hours in people who use it. The drug is so powerful that it is often used to put down horses, which typically are hundreds of pounds heavier than humans.
