Unity Township supervisors are recognizing area firefighters for their work during the Marguerite mine sinkhole operation from late last year. Yesterday, 76 first responders from six fire companies and the township command post were given unit citations for their involvement last December. Officials were trying to rescue 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard, who fell through a sinkhole near Monday’s Union Restaurant into the abandoned mine while looking for her lost cat. Ultimately, Pollard did not survive, but firefighters and other officials worked tirelessly for days to recover her remains and bring closure to her family.
