Leaders with the New Kensington Volunteer Fire Department are looking to consolidate the current five stations down to three. The plan is a response to the ongoing shortage of volunteers for the fire service. Officials have proposed closing Engine House Number Two on Freeport Street and turning Hilltop House Number Three into an administrative building. The firefighters who work out those stations would then move into Station Number One on Fourth Avenue. City leaders have signed off on the plan but it still needs to be approved by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
