A county common pleas court judge denied bail yesterday for a man awaiting retrial on charges that he set a fire 30 years ago that killed his wife and two children. The Trib reports that 58-year-old James Young has served over 30 years in prison of three consecutive life sentences following his conviction in 1995 of first-degree murder and arson. His conviction was overturned in March and a retrial ordered after a county judge ruled that the verdict was based on outdated science regarding the fire’s origins. Judge Michael Stewart III said that bail had to be denied as state law prohibits bail for those who could face a life sentence in jail.
