The Westmoreland County Sheriff has asked a county judge to rescind a 20-year-old order that requires sheriff deputies to transport jailed inmates to the district courts for preliminary hearings. The Trib reports that Sheriff James Albert said the move would save taxpayers $250,000 in overtime and would allow the deputies to perform other mandated duties including warrant service. On April 2, Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge Chris Scherer will hear Albert’s argument to vacate the order.
