Westmoreland County Libraries are making free radon test kits available to residents. Forty of the digital testing devices are being distributed to the 26 library branches in the coming weeks. Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and roughly 40 percent of homes in Pennsylvania have levels that exceed U.S. EPA recommendations, according to the state Department of Environment Protection. The colorless, odorless gas has also been connected to some other health issues, including leukemia.
