Capacity is set to double at the juvenile detention center in Westmoreland County thanks to a renovation project. Director Rich Gordon says extensive work to replace doors and locks at the Hempfield Township facility is almost complete. The lockup is licensed to hold 16 residents, but it has been limited to only eight since reopening in 2023 after a voluntary shutdown. Gordon wants to expand the detention center, saying the county could generate revenue by housing juvenile inmates from surrounding counties.
