Six defense witnesses were called to the stand yesterday for the trial of Robert Bowers.
WTAE-TV reports that Bowers was convicted earlier this year of killing 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018. The defense focused on trauma and problems in the defendant’s personal life, During cross-examination, the prosecution asked questions challenging the credibility of defense expert witness. Dr. Katherine Porterfield is a clinical psychologist who wrote a report spotlighting Bowers’ childhood, adulthood, and family history of mental health and trauma.
The sentencing phase of the trial is expected to continue today. A jury will decide if Bowers should be put to death or be sentenced to life in prison.
