Local officials are agreeing to a settlement in a federal lawsuit filed against the Westmoreland County Juvenile Detention Center.
Last week, county commissioners approved a payout of $11,000 in connection with the litigation. Attorneys for a former teen inmate say four corrections officers used excessive force to detain him as he was trying to call his mother in February of last year, leaving him with facial injuries and symptoms related to a concussion.
The facility has been closed since June over staffing shortages and other issues noted by state inspectors, including another incident involving the use of force. Westmoreland County Controller Jeff Balzer says local officials are hoping to reopen the detention center by the end of this month.
