Officials in Westmoreland County say they are not yet able to reopen the juvenile detention center because they have not found enough qualified workers.
County commissioners increased salaries for juvenile corrections positions by about seven thousand dollars annually late last year in an attempt to draw more candidates, but they are still short five officers, according to Director Rich Gordon. The facility has been closed since last June after state inspectors cited the operation over problems with staffing and training.
Director Gordon says efforts to hire are still ongoing, but, even after new officers come on board it takes another three weeks to train them.
