The City of Latrobe has been named an inaugural inductee into Dole’s Banana Hall of Fame. The food company is honoring the city for its history with the Banana Split and the annual Banana Split Festival According to Latrobe officials, the Banana Split dates back to 1904 when David Strickler, a 23-year-old local soda jerk, cut a banana lengthwise, added vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream and topped it with syrups, marshmallow, chopped nuts, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry – and made banana and dessert history. The other inductees include Bobby Banana, the Dole mascot, and Brennan’s New Orleans, creators of the dessert Bananas Foster.
