The cold weather is of great concern for first responders who are expected to head out no matter what the conditions are.
The Tribune-Review reports that fire departments have been preparing for being out in the extreme cold weather if they are needed to fight a fire. Volunteers at some fire departments stayed overnight at the fire halls to be able to move out quickly and not worry about someone’s car not starting. Some of the concerns facing some of the fire departments include hydrants freezing up and keeping firefighters warm.
One plan in place is for the Westmoreland County Transit Authority to send a bus to the scene of a fire to use as a warming shelter for the firefighters.
