Juneteenth was commemorated at the Pennsylvania State Capitol on Monday. The ceremony held by the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus recognizes June 19, 1865, the date slavery ended in the Confederate states after enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom in Texas. It was declared a state holiday in 2019, two years before it was officially designated a federal holiday by then-President Joe Biden. Caucus Chair Representative Napoleon Nelson said that while Juneteenth is a time for celebration, “we move forward and recommit ourselves to the work that we still have yet to do.”
