The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County is setting up a small-scale treatment plant to test an alternative to improve the taste and smell of drinking water.
The Tribune-Review reports that this will be at the McKeesport facility, and the alternative will be the addition of peracetic acid to the water instead of chlorine. Officials say that peracetic acid is safer than chlorine.
The additive has not been approved for use in Pennsylvania, but it is used to treat drinking water in Texas and Kentucky.
