A man riding a bicycle early Friday in a neighborhood in Hempfield was arrested for stealing items out of cars.
State Police in Greensburg say that 32-year-old Douglas Bartrug of Pittsburgh was on his bike at 3:50 AM in the Farmbrook Drive area of Fort Allen. When they tried to stop him, he continued to bike around them. He eventually ditched the bike near Wheatfield Drive and tried to get away on foot, but troopers found him in a nearby stream. He dropped a plastic bag containing identification and shopping cards belonging to people in the area, and he also dropped a handgun allegedly stolen from a truck.
Bartrug is in Westmoreland County Prison after failing to post $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for March 1st.
