Last month, the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County was cited for excessive levels of organic carbon in drinking water for about half of the 400,000 customers served.
The Tribune-Review reports that the authority is treating the water with additional chemicals to fix the problem for the water from the Beaver Run Plant, which serves the northern half of the county, along with Monroeville and Plum in Allegheny County and Gilpin in Armstrong County.
Experts say the excess carbon levels caused no health effects for residents, and it was caused by excessive organic material like leaves, grass and branches that decomposed and leached into the reservoir.
