As former president George HW Bush is being laid to rest later today in College Station, Texas, word has come out concerning a connection between the 41st president of the United States and a man from Hempfield who worked with President Bush when he was served in the US Navy.
The Tribune-Review reports that Andrew Palenchar was on board the USS Finback when he helped to rescue President Bush while he was serving in 1944. In 2017, after Palenchar passed away, former President Bush sent a letter to Palenchar’s daughter, Sandra Bourassa of Colorado, calling the men on board the Finback “The best America had to offer” and offered his condolences to the family.
