A house in Hempfield was heavily damaged by fire Thursday morning.
The Trib reports that crews were called out at 9:50 AM to a home in the 1000 block of Middletown Road. The homeowner was working in his yard when he saw heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house. He flagged down a passing motorist to call 911 as his cell phone was in the house.
The fire is being investigated by a state fire marshal. Smith indicated he had lit a fire in his wood-burning stove and had lighter fluid stored nearby.
Smith said he was not hurt but lost his cat. He is staying with relatives.
Seven fire companies were on scene to fight the fire.
