Jeanette’s fire chief said that the city’s aging water lines were a hindrance to the firefighters’ ability to put the fire out that killed five people Wednesday morning. The Trib reports that four children and 27-year-old Tyler King were killed in the fire yesterday. Jeanette Fire Chief Bill Frye and the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County said a six-inch water line fed the fire hydrants on the scene and water needed to be pushed uphill contributed to problems with fighting the fire. By the time a second line was tapped and they were able to get water, Frye said the house was already collapsing.
