A Pittsburgh nonprofit says a couple of Westmoreland County communities could save millions of dollars by installing solar power systems. Volunteers with the Pennsylvania Solar Center recently mapped roughly 40 government-owned buildings in Greensburg and Jeannette in order to estimate their solar power potential. The group says the cities would save more than 750-thousand dollars on electricity in the first year that solar panels were installed on the buildings’ roofs, a savings of over 19-million after 25 years. The organization will also develop estimates on costs for installing systems and help connect local officials with installation contractors.
